Cerebral small vessel disease is a condition of a great clinical and social importance – a common cause of cognitive decline, dementia, movement and psychiatric disorders. In the last years there is an increasing agreement that a key role in the condition is played by the small cerebral vessels endothelium and the blood-brain barrier. However, still there is lack of clear understanding of the condition. MRI markers of small vessel disease include: white matter hyperintensities (Leukoaraiosis), lacunes, microbleeds, dilated perivascular spaces. Arterial spin labeling gives the chance for non-invasive examination of brain perfusion and an easier way to look into brain physiology. Through ASL we reveal significant correlation between different markers of small vessel disease and global perfusion changes in the brain – a potential step in the better understanding of that process.en_US
