The study included 148 patients with renal cell carcinoma (RCC) divided into two groups: 98 without metastases and 50 with metastases. A comparative analysis of the two groups was made in terms of tumor size, degree of differentiation, tumor necrosis, sarcomatoid features, and involvement of a renal vein. The presence of these clinical and morphological parameters is associated with an increased risk of metastasis. In patients with metastatic RCC, immunohistochemical expression of Neuropilin and YAP was examined. Neuropilin plays a role as a co-receptor in the binding of VEGF and its receptors and thus participates in the process of angiogenesis. In addition to endothelial cells, it is also expressed in cells of the immune system and epithelial cells-benign and malignant. The results of this study indicate that the increased expression of Neuropilin in RCC is associated with an increased risk of death and reduced overall survival (OS). The YAP-protein is a part of the so-called Hippo-pathway. The main functions of the Hippo pathway are related to limiting tissue growth in adults and to modulate cell proliferation, differentiation and migration in developing organs. Under physiological conditions, Hippo-pathway negatively regulates Yes-associated protein (YAP). In some types of tumours, elevated YAP expression has been reported. The results from this study show that increased YAP expression in RCC is associated with reduced overall survival and an increased risk of death.en_US
