In the daily ambulatory surgical practice, some of the most commonly performed interventions are related not only to the sound knowledge of anatomical objects and features of the oral structures but also to the possibilities for their visualization and further examination. This is why there is an enormous need for cone beam computed tomography ( CBCT ) diagnostics when planning the surgical extraction of impacted teeth and molars, which are situated in close proximity to the mandibular canal, planning implant treatment, assessment of various types of cysts and tumours, diagnostics of fractures, inflammatory diseases of the jawbones and many more. The main issues arising from the lack of sufficient preoperative diagnostics, planning and preparation are related to the traumatic injury to the inferior alveolar nerve. This damage, in turn, leads to various symptoms and functional disturbances, which can persist for months and, in rare cases, may even be irreversible, significantly reducing the affected patients' quality of life. The ability to prevent such severe complications is a leading factor for implementing CBCT as a method of choice and a standard for perioperative diagnostics of interventions directly influenced by the position of this nerve. The integration of contemporary techniques such as 3D printing, the limits of which have not yet been studied, makes it possible to complement the existing diagnostic methods and significantly improve their accuracy.en_US
