Brain functional asymmetry is a particularly interesting and topical issue in modern natural science, biology and medicine. Standard models of asymmetry are based on the dichotomous division of functional competence between the two hemispheres in the context of complementarity by assuming the existence of typical areas of "dominance" of each of them. However, observations indicate, that not all individuals are subject to standard patterns of lateralization due to peculiarities in the functional hemispheric specialization. Hence, the increasingly intensive discussions in recent years on individual distinctions in brain asymmetry. As primary among them stand out the ones related to handedness and gender. True proportions of handedness and some functional asymmetries (leg, eye) among Bulgarians in juvenile age and early adulthood are subject of analysis for the first time along with their aggregates as totals and by gender. It is established that the susceptibility to some geometrical-optical illusions (specifically Sander parallelogram) depends on the type of manual asymmetry and ocular dominance. It is established for the time that spectral parameters of heart rate variability during mental stress differ between left-handed and right-handed people, probably reflecting autonomic regulation of cardiac activity. A pattern of seasonal frequency of birth of non-right-handed individuals in the Bulgarian population, differing from that of right-handed, was established. Differences in the age of onset of menarche in left-handed and right-handed women is reported for the first time in literature. Based on the patterns in handedness, the general trend manifested greater magnitude of lateralization in males is confirmed. A concept explaining atypical seasonal variations in the incidence of birth of non-right-handed individuals is put forward.en_US
