More than half a million people a year in the United States alone and about two million patients worldwide reach the end-stage renal disease (ESRD). Patients with ESRD have two options to stay alive: 1. Dialysis treatment for life 2. Kidney transplantation. Of these, kidney transplantation is considered a method of treatment that provides a better quality of life, restores physiological metabolism and is associated with less cost. There is a general tendency for many patients to switch directly to haemodialysis treatment, often remaining ill-informed about other substitution treatment methods (kidney transplantation and peritoneal dialysis). The present study aims to determine the awareness of patients with chronic kidney disease about kidney transplantation. The object of the study will be healthy controls, patients with chronic kidney disease, followed in the Clinic of Nephrology at the St. Marina University Hospital - Varna, patients on haemodialysis replacement therapy, as well as those who have already had a kidney transplant. The methods include the preparation of a questionnaire following the medical and social situation in the country and determining the level of knowledge of Bulgarian patients about kidney transplantation. The results will objectify the extent to which the patient with CKD is aware of the possibilities for substitution treatment. This will then be used to prepare a manual for the patient with chronic kidney disease, which will answer the most common questions and "myths" about kidney transplantation, which will allow avoiding misunderstandings once the kidney transplant process begins.en_US
